• Location of the first detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.
• First street car north of Toronto.
• Home to Ragged Chutes, the world's only naturally compressed air plant operated hydraulically.
• Had it's own stock exchange.
• First and only opera house in Northern Ontario.
• Sponsored a hockey team in the N.H.A., the forerunner to the N.H.L. The Art Ross Trophy, still awarded annually to the Most Valuable Player in the NHL was named after a local team owner.
• Birthplace of the Northern Miner, the North Bay Nugget and the Northern Daily News newspapers.
• At its peak, boasted 120 actively producing silver mines.
• Had it's own Million Dollar Lake.
• Profits from one Cobalt mine, funded the building of Casa Loma in Toronto.
• The discovery of Cobalt in 1903 was the spark which opened up Northern Ontario.
