COBALT FACTS
- Location of the first detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police.
- First street car north of Toronto.
- Home to Ragged Chutes, the world's only naturally compressed air plant operated
hydraulically.
- Had it's own stock exchange.
- First and only opera house in Northern Ontario.
- Sponsored a hockey team in the N.H.A., the forerunner to the N.H.L. The Art Ross Trophy,
still awarded annually to the Most Valuable Player in the NHL was named after a local team
owner.
- Birthplace of the Northern Miner, the North Bay Nugget and the Northern Daily News
newspapers.
- At its peak, boasted 120 actively producing silver mines.
- Had it's own Million Dollar Lake.
- Profits from one Cobalt mine, funded the building of Casa Loma in Toronto.
- The discovery of Cobalt in 1903 was the spark which opened up Northern Ontario.
